Every time a Solar Eclipse or Lunar Eclipse happens, people all around start searching for what it means to them astrologically. Since ancient times, they are seen as great omens or indicators of events. Eclipses are strong karmic events, which could trigger big changes in life, such as a pregnancy, a new job, new relationship or other dramatic/noticeable changes. The common thread of Eclipses is that the events tend to be unexpected and they tend to cause a major shift in a person’s life.

Basic Information: What is an Eclipse?

A Solar Eclipse happens when the Sun is aligned with both the Moon and the Earth, this happens during a New Moon. From our point of view in Earth, we see darkness, as the shadow of the Moon seems to cover up the Sun.

A Lunar Eclipse happens during a Full Moon, when the Earth stands between the Moon and the Sun. The Moon derives her light from the Sun, so during a Lunar Eclipse, the Earth is blocking the Moon from receiving the Sun’s light. This makes the Moon disappear, going dark in the skies.

New Moons and Full Moons are the basic astrological event that we have all year round, with a monthly frequency. The New Moon is the conjunction of Sun and Moon in the same sign, while the Full Moon is their opposition, with the Moon sitting in the sign opposing the Sun — for instance, the Sun in Taurus and the Moon in Scorpio. The monthly lunations influence the surrounding weeks, indicating monthly trends. Similarly, the Eclipses influence months, indicating yearly trends.

A cheap, yet effective analogy, would be to consider a Solar Eclipse as a super New Moon; and a Lunar Eclipse as a super Full Moon.

What tends to happen around an Eclipse?

On a personal level, the weeks around Eclipses tend to be surprising and noticeable. As introduced above, important events like marriages, new jobs or big announcements are possible. These are moments for important changes or important turning points. People could be entering or leaving our lives at this moment. Similarly, you could be lead to start or end a big project around an Eclipse.

An important warning is that Eclipses tend to be psychically challenging. Making final decisions a week before or a week after an Eclipse is usually not recommended, as circumstances might quickly change, or we might not be on our clearest mindset. This doesn’t mean not making changes, it means not rushing immediately. On the challenging aspect, the weeks around the Eclipse could be a time of low energy or gloomy moods as well, so we should be aware of that.

During an Eclipse, that is during the duration of it astronomically, it is a great time for prayer, meditation and spiritual work. Prayers, mantras and rituals made during Eclipses tend to have double the effect than usual. Overall, if possible, I would recommend this type of activity during an Eclipse; as other activities made during them tend to cause a certain degree of mental disturbance or upset. Of course, this is not always possible, as we have work and obligations. In that case, try taking things slowly and avoid arguments or clashes during an Eclipse.

Personal Effects of Eclipses

Astrologically, the important thing to pay attention are the houses affected by an Eclipse. As I write this in 2022, the Eclipses will be happening in the signs of Aries and Libra, so we have to see which houses these signs represent in your chart to understand the meaning of the eclipses for you. This can be seen from the point of view of your Ascendant or Moon, as these are the most personal points in your chart.

For instance, a Leo person will have Aries as the 9th house, so changes regarding their father are a strong possibility. For someone with Aquarius ascendant, Aries in the 3rd house could indicate a big communication project or events related to their siblings.

For people with Aries and Libra ascendants, this is a moment of big changes, as all areas of their lives tend to change now. This is a strong moment of rebuilding or reorienting their lives. When the Eclipses are happening in your ascendant sign, it is a very important moment in life, where many decisions and shifts happen.

• 1st house: your whole life and circumstances might change, you might get a personality upgrade of sorts. A lot of change and movement around you and your life.

• 5th house: if you have children, you could be focusing a lot on them at this moment, putting them first or being more strongly involved with them. For those without children, this transit could deal with new creative projects, and new study/educational endeavors.
• 6th house: this is the house of drudgery, of activities that are necessary and not exactly pleasurable, such as routines or chores. So you could be restructuring your life right now, finding new ways of handling your day to day life. A bigger focus on health and well being could come into play. You could deal with opposition from others in a constructive manner.
• 7th house: big life changes, with a special focus on your relationships. You could be thinking a lot about marriage, or building a long-term relationship. Overall, you want to make changes in the way you relate and love. Alternatively, you could be dealing with new business partnerships or associations, as well as profitable ventures.
• 8th house: this is the house of transformation and change, combined with the wild card energy of eclipses. So usually it denotes some sort of unexpected change, or obstacle, coming in your way. In the long term, you will tend to benefit from this change in direction, even though things might seem shocking at the moment. You could find yourself more strongly interested in the occult.
• 9th house: traveling, new higher education courses, religious pilgrimages and other forms of expanding your mind could come into play now. Important events related to your father could happen now as well. Changing your life direction, with a more structured plan or outlook, is a good idea now.

• 12th house: this is a moment for endings and finalizations, people have negative connotations towards these things, which stem from a fear of change. This is a moment of change, something in your life is ending, a lot of times something you actually wanted to end; and you are adjusting yourself mentally to this new reality, this new path.

When Eclipses Truly Hit You: Personal Planets

The previous point, of the houses touched by the Eclipses, is important and a representation of change. But the true strong, life changing, effects of Eclipses only come when a personal point in our charts is touched by one. That is, when a planet is within 5° conjunct or opposing an Eclipse.

For example, in the chart above, we have a Solar Eclipse happening at 7 degrees Libra. So anyone with a planet near 7 degrees Libra or Aries would be affected more strongly by the Eclipse. If someone has Venus at 10° Aries, for example, they could come into a new financial opportunity or a new relationship around this Eclipse. Someone with Mercury at 5° Libra could start a new commercial project, maybe a good opportunity for marketing and selling an idea.

Below we have predictions for planets and points being touched by an Eclipse:

• Sun: Big changes to your father or career. It could show a turning point in life, with major changes happening to you and your ego.
• Moon: Your mentality could be changing, as you could be going through a complicated emotional period. You change your perception of the world, as well as your reaction and attitude to it. New desires and pursuits could arise out of this. Big changes happening in your mom’s life, or in your relationship with her. You could also be dealing a lot more with people and public life.
• Mars: Some conflict or argument could trigger you into changing. You could form a new action plan or strategy towards life and your goals. This could trigger a very dynamic period in your life, where you are doing a lot and going hard after your goals.
• Mercury: a big communication project could come into your life, or something related to commerce. Either way, communication plays a key role in your life at this moment. Opportunities arise from expressing yourself. It can alternatively indicate a travel opportunity, like working/studying abroad.
• Jupiter: lucky opportunities are a possibility now. It could also indicate a new intellectual endeavor or academic project, a good moment for advancing your studies in some subject. Religion or spiritual studies are strongly favored as well.
• Venus: new relationships or an improvement in your relationships could come; meeting someone special, getting engaged or married are a few examples. It could also mean a great financial opportunity, ranging from raises to outright windfalls. In my experience, Venus being touched by an Eclipse usually represents financial improvement of some sort.
• Saturn: something forces you to take responsibility, or grow up in some level. This is a moment where you learn the importance of hard work and consistent effort. Issues with your grandparents, or elderly people, could come into play now. Alternatively, this could show a new phase in your career or professional life.
• Rahu (North Node) or Ketu (South Node): being karmic points, related to the eclipses, their prominence during an Eclipse will tend to show big turning points in life. The effects here are usually long standing, influencing you for years to come.
• Ascendant: your whole life could change. A great moment of evolution for a person, as they might become disenchanted with some former passions, finding new more important ones. A highly active point in life, where many opportunities and ideas appear before you.

Conclusion

Eclipses are some of the most important astrological events around, with their strong karmic nature and capacity towards affecting our lives and minds. On a personal level, Eclipses will always (minorly) affect the specific house in our chart touched by them. So, for instance, every Virgo person will feel 2nd house changes from an Eclipse in Libra.

But the true big effects of Eclipses only come when your chart is personally touched by them, with a planet or point being within 5° of the ecliptic point. On that note, someone with a planet or the Ascendant fulfilling these conditions would feel much stronger effects than someone with no point of their chart doing so.
